Spinks Lane Therapy Centre Garden

14th October 2020

With the Covid-19 restrictions put in place earlier this year and the potential affect it would have on clients and staff the Occupational Therapy Team have been working hard to maintain a safe outdoor area for both to use. The garden surrounds the building and is large enough to maintain good social distancing in the fresh air.

As AHP staff from Mid and West Essex were not able to access the safe spaces provided in Colchester and Clacton a safe space was developed in the garden area allowing staff to take time out and just sit in an open environment, dig, weed or pick some fruit and vegetables.  The area has also been used for non-clinical meetings by staff.

In recent weeks the garden has been utilised to assess and treat clients with a learning disability.  OT have assessed a client’s mobility, fine motor skills, concentration levels, engagement and communication needs by encouraging participation in a range of garden activities such as making a bird feeder, watering, picking some vegetables and potting up plants.

Physiotherapy have been able to use the garden to set up their parallel bars, as they are too large to transport to the patients’ homes. This has allowed them to assess mobility and complete standing exercises safely, as there is currently no indoor space allowing them to do this.  In addition the garden is used by a local college who complete 1:1 lessons with people with a learning disability and challenging needs.  During lockdown they were not able to access and maintain the area and it was felt that it was important that they had an area to return to that would allow their activities to continue.
