Marking the NHS' 72nd Birthday

The UK is to take part in a nationwide clap in honour of the 72nd NHS’ birthday, in what is hoped will become an annual tradition.

Who can remember, back in March, the first hand clap? I was amazed at how many people joined in that first week, all looking a bit anxious and self-conscious, but out there all the same, clapping politely and smiling and nodding! As the weeks went back the clapping became louder and wilder, with trumpets and pans, fireworks and brass bands!
Now, we are all being asked, as a nation, to do it one more time at 5pm on the 5th July to celebrate the 72nd birthday of the NHS.

Public buildings, including Clacton Hospital, The Royal Albert Hall, Blackpool Tower, the Shard and the Wembley Arch will also be lit up in blue to mark the occasion. Broadcasters will suspend transmissions for a moment as a sign of respect for the NHS. It has always been a privilege to be in the NHS and work alongside the most dedicated, caring and inspiring people. We are uniquely allowed into peoples’ lives, often when they are at their most vulnerable, and I am reminded daily of the massive, positive impact we have on everyone in our communities. The public also recognise what I see and their support over the years as well as the last few months has been outstanding.

I hope that you all get a chance to join in and take a moment to reflect on the madness of the last four months, celebrate the fact that we are all still here and please congratulate yourself for a job brilliantly done.

Yours sincerely
